The Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and team president Bruce Allen announced Jay Gruden was being released from the team on the morning of October 7th.

The Redskins fell to a 0-5 after a 33-7 loss to the New England Patriots on October 6th.

"Through the first five games of the 2019 season, the team has clearly not performed up to expectations, and we all share in that responsibility," said the Washington Redskins via a statement. "We are committed to doing all that we can collectively as an organization to turn things around and give our Redskins fans a team they can be proud of in 2019 and beyond."

Gruden had a 35-49-1 record in his sixth season with the team. He had one more year remaining on his contract and is owed $5 million for the 2020 season. He becomes the fifth coach to be fired by owner Daniel Snyder, joining Norv Turner, Matty Schottenheimer, Jim Zorn, and Mike Shanahan.

Bill Callahan, the Redskins' assistant head coach/offensive line coach, will serve as interim head coach for the time being.
