Danica Patrick might be the most famous female NASCAR driver of all-time, but she wasn’t the first. Janet Guthrie set the stage for Patrick in 1977 when she became the first woman to ever to start at both the Daytona 500 and Indianapolis 500.

In 1978, Guthrie finished the Indianapolis 500 in ninth place, proving she had the need for speed. Her finish was the highest ever for a female driver until Danica Patrick finished fourth in 2005. Don’t be surprised when you see her pop up later on this list!
