WNBA Suspends Williams For 10 Games Following Domestic Violence Attack
The Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA have announced a 10-game suspension for Riquna Williams. The suspension was handed down after Williams started a domestic violence incident with her ex-girlfriend in December.
The attack led to Williams' arrested in April at which time she was brought up on felony charges of burglary with assault or battery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.
Williams struck ex-girlfriend Alkeria Davis in the head and pulled her hair after Davis opened the front door of her home on Dec. 6. The attack only stopped after a man at the home broke up the attack. After she was stopped from beating her ex-girlfriend, Williams went to her car and pulled out a gun, pointed the weapon at the man, and screamed: "you'll get all 18." No further violence occurred as Williams then drove away from the premises.
Despite the violent altercation that included threats of death, the WNBA claimed in a statement that a 10-game suspension is all that is warranted.
"Based on the investigation, consultation, and a careful weighing of all the facts and circumstances, the WNBA determined that a ten-game suspension was appropriate," a statement released by the league states. "Among other factors, the WNBA took into account the nature and seriousness of the conduct at issue, including the involvement of a firearm."
The seven-year veteran of the WNBA signed a new contract with the team in May.Williams' suspension starts on Thursday. Along with her suspension, the league will require the star player to undergo therapy for her anger management issues.
