Rafael Nadal captured his 19th grand slam title after he beat Daniil Medvedev to win the US Open on the weekend.

After four hours and 50 minutes, five sets of tennis and scores of 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, Nadal won his fourth US Open title.

Nadal is now only one win away from matching Roger Federer's record of 20 Grand Slam titles.

The win was emotional for Nadal as he broke down in tears as a montage video of his career played before the trophy presentation.

"This has been one of the most emotional nights in my tennis career," says Nadal. "It's been a pleasure to play in front of you in this amazing stadium ... many thanks for everything."

Even though he lost the final, Medvedev was the first Russian to reach a major final since Marat Safin won the Australian Open in 2005 and the youngest male finalist at the tournament since Novac Djokovic lost to Nadal in 2010.

"It's because of your energy I was here in the final," says Medvedev. "You guys were pushing me to prolong this match because you wanted to see more tennis and because of you guys I was fighting like hell."
