Female athletes are some of the most talented athletes in the world. From Jackie Joyner Kersee to Ronda Rousey, there is a rich history of women who have proved that they are as good as, if not better than, their male counterparts. Some of them have even proved it on the playing field. Do you remember Manon Rheaume, the first woman to play goalie in an NHL game? Hers is an incredible story, and so are the stories of the rest of the pioneering women on this list!

Manon Rheaume changed the sports landscape forever in 1992 when she became the first woman to ever play in one of North America’s four major sports. During an exhibition game against the St. Louis Blues, Rheaume was asked to “man” the net for the Tampa Bay Lighting.

She made her time on the ice count. During a 20 minute period, Rheaume defended nine shots, and saved seven. After the period ended, she was removed from the game, but her mark was left forever.
